Billie Eilish is proving that self-love and body positivity aren’t easy concepts to grasp, even at the celebrity level. Loving the way you look takes time and, in some cases, can only be achieved by looking back at how far you’ve come.
While Eilish has been vocal about body positivity in the past, the Grammy award-winning singer provided intimate details of her struggles with her body image as the honoree of Vogue’s first-ever video cover.
The 21-year-old also recently made headlines as the new girlfriend of rock star Jesse Rutherford, but, as the Vogue interview plainly states, “The relationship Eilish wants to discuss isn’t the one with… the frontman of indie-pop outfit the Neighbourhood… but with herself. Specifically, her new connection to her body.”
Eilish tells the magazine: “Going through my teenage years of hating myself and all that stupid sh*t, a lot of it came from my anger toward my body and how mad I was at how much pain it’s caused me, and how much I’ve lost because of things that happened to it.”
Eilish added how she struggled with her self-image based on several injuries which cut her dance career short, but which also led to her eventual music career.
“I felt like my body was gaslighting me for years,” she elaborates, after discussing the condition she lives with called hypermobility, which can be debilitating for movement if treated incorrectly.

“I had to go through a process of being like, My body is actually me,” she continues. “And it’s not out to get me.”
As a young but highly successful singer, Eilish has faced her fair share of scrutiny from the media and the public. She was both praised and shamed for her revealing photoshoot for British Vogue back in 2021, where she swapped out her characteristic baggy sweatshirts and jeans for a more “adult” ensemble of lingerie.
She admitted that she used baggy clothing to prevent fans and media from sexualizing her body, but she also understood the power that can come with baring it all.
The new Vogue interview includes much about Eilish’s commitment to fighting climate change, and how she’s working as a young activist to influence others to do the same. It’s a great focus to have to help make the world a better place, because whatever Eilish’s fashion choices mean, the only thing that matters is how she feels.
