“My name is Tunde Oyeneyin (@tune2tunde). Both my mother and father are Nigerian, and I am a first generation American originally from Houston. I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a makeup artist, and after working with various cosmetics companies for 16 years, I now work as an indoor cycling instructor for Peloton. These two career paths really speak to my desire to positively impact the way people feel about themselves. I think beauty is an attitude. How you feel on the inside dictates how other people view you—if you feel great about yourself, that energy radiates. In my current role, I can positively impact anywhere from 1,200 to 22,000 people each time I go Live on the bike. In my classes, I remind the riders that the voice in your heads has so much power—we have to be so mindful of what we say to ourselves.
I moved to New York a year ago, and I’m still in awe that I can call this magical city home. Though I teach eight to 12 classes a week, there are truly so many layers to my job beyond the bike—I’m also in meetings, on conference calls, and prepping for upcoming projects, like anyone else. When I’m not doing that I’m working on Speak, a project I started on my Instagram which aims to elevate the voices of those dealing with adversity.
I am an absolute skincare junkie. I’m always looking for things that minimize pores and keep my skin looking bright. I love Dr. Dennis Gross Peel Pads in Extra Strength, which make my skin feel so soft and renewed. I also use an exfoliating mask about twice a week, and my latest obsession is the Algenist Alive Prebiotic Balancing Mask. It removes all my gunk and instantly leaves my skin looking younger, healthier, and more… alive! Adding a toner into my routine has been a game changer, and my favorite is the Vinopure Pore Minimizing Toner by Caudalie. Aside from the obvious, it also helps to control shine and breakouts, and I feel like it helps intensify my moisturizer.
Vitamin C really helps with dark spots, and also fights free radicals. I like to use C E Ferulic from Skinceuticals daily on my face and neck. But in my opinion, sunscreen is perhaps the most important and neglected skincare step. It truly is the best preventative measure! Venus Williams just launched a line of sunscreens, and the Unrivaled Sun Serum SPF35 is lightweight and hydrating. As a Black woman, I’m grateful to see Venus enter this space—not only as a Black CEO, but specifically in sun protection. Seeing her face helps spread the importance of sun protection to our community.
Before we talk about makeup, we have to talk about remover. I like to remove any buildup with Olay Regenerist Daily Exfoliating Wipes first so I get a cleaner wash. Typically I wouldn’t put on a full face of makeup for a workout, but when I’m teaching on the bike I use longwear products to show up in my Sunday best. Make Up For Ever’s Matte Velvet foundation in shade R560 has a waterproof formula with 24-hour wear. For concealers, I move between the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Cacao and the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer in SC-8—the former is best for day-to-day use, but nothing seems to beat Laura Mercier when it comes to coverage. And another thing, people ask what false lashes I’m wearing all the time, and I swear, I don’t wear any! It’s just a really great mascara, Make Up For Ever’s Smoky Stretch Mascara. If they ever discontinue it, I’m not sure what I’ll do!
Color is the fun stuff. I love draping my blush and eyeshadow together as one to create a more harmonious color story, and I tend to vibe with bright pinks, bronzed golds, orange and berry tones—my deep skin soaks it in like honey. My latest find has been a brand-new line by Krystle Parram called Tallawah. Negril is a beautiful loose highlighter I like to use on my face and body for the perfect moonlight glow. A bright lip is my favorite makeup look because it’s never too much or too little, and it’s always appropriate. I’ve spent many years on the hunt for the perfect color and the perfect formula, and the one I use now can hold through a 45 min sweat sesh. My DMs are constantly full of questions about it. I’m excited to reveal that it’s actually part of a line of lip colors called Speak beauty that I’m preparing to launch. I named Veronica, the perfect shade of red on every skin tone, after my mother. I vividly remember watching the way she applied her lipstick when I was a child—I learned to value and recognize my own power from her. If I’m not wearing lipstick, I use Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Lip Pop to hydrate and nourish my lips. Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen is another lip treatment that’s great for nighttime.
I change up my hairstyle a lot. You might spot me in anything from faux goddess locs to a sleek Alicia Keys-inspired high braid. When I made the move from LA to NY, I was nervous I’d have to go through a few stylists before finding one that I connected with. But I lucked out and found my hair fairy (as I call her) Brooke Jasmyn on my first try. I actually stalked her on Instagram and DMd her asking who her stylist was, only to find out she did her own hair. If you are in the NY area, I highly recommend looking her up.
Because of all my styling, I have to focus on products that help with damage and repair. I’m a big fan of anything from Carol’s Daughter, and use their Coco Crème shampoo and conditioner to start. I also love the hair mask, though I was recently introduced to Taraji P Henson’s new line TPH, and her After Dark Overnight Repair Mask is great, too. It leaves my hair feeling smooth and silky. The Master Cleanse from TPH also serves as a great scalp treatment in between washes. I follow my wash with the Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Anti-Breakage Spray. Tracee Ellis Ross also recently launched a new line called Pattern, and I use her leave-in conditioner to enhance my hair’s natural texture. And organic tea tree oil is a must for breakage and damaged edges. Honestly, I’ve had the dream of shaving my head since I was 19, and though I’m not quite there yet, I look forward to the day that I finally decide to own it.
My fullest form of relaxation always includes water. Being able to see the sun’s reflection bouncing off of water feels just as revitalizing to me as actually being in it. When I’m home, I love treating myself to warm, candlelit baths. Add in some good music and a glass of wine, and it’s just about my favorite type of night. I use the Herbivore Coco Rose body polish just as I finish a hot bath. It makes me feel silky smooth without leaving a ton of residue behind in the tub. When I get out, I moisturize with Palmer’s Cocoa Butter. It’s been around forever and never fails to leave my skin beaming. But the best part is, it’s under $10.”
