This year’s BET Awards will look a little different. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the 20th annual installment of the show honoring Black entertainers and athletes will be virtual. Comedian and Insecure star Amanda Seales will host the awards, which also coincide with BET’s 40th anniversary. Drake leads this year’s nominations with six, followed closely behind by Megan Thee Stallion and Roddy Ricch.
Airing on Sunday, June 28, the three-hour live show will include performances from Stallion, Chloe x Halle, John Legend, and more. Plus, Beyoncé herself will accept this year’s Humanitarian Award for fighting against racial inequality and aiding those disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 through her BeyGOOD initiative. At age 8, her daughter Blue Ivy could also walk away with her first BET Award for being featured on Bey’s “Brown Skin Girl.” Other high-profile artists that could make appearances from their homes Sunday night include Cardi B, Zendaya, The Weeknd, Serena Williams, and Lizzo.

How can I watch this year’s BET Awards?
This year’s telecast will be broadcast live on Sunday, June 28 from 8 PM to 11 PM ET/PT. You can catch the virtual event on BET, BET Her, and CBS if you have a cable provider or login. As for streaming the show, log onto BET.com or sign-up for CBS Access, which offers a 7-day free trial for first-time users. A pre-show, hosted by Terrence J and Erica Ash, will air at 7 PM ET/PT on BET, just an hour prior to the awards.

Who is nominated?
The BET Awards celebrate accomplishments by Black artists across music, film, and sports. While Drake boasts a field-leading six nominations, with Stallion and Ricch at five, several artists earned four nominations, including Nicki Minaj, Lizzo, DaBaby, Chris Brown, and Beyoncé, whose Homecoming is also nominated in the Best Movie category. The night’s top category is arguably Album of the Year. Nominees in that category are as follows: Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You, Megan Thee Stallion’s Fever, Beyoncé’s Homecoming: The Live Album, H.E.R.’s I Used to Know Her, DaBaby’s Kirk, and Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial.

Movies including Just Mercy, Queen & Slim, and Harriet are being recognized with nominations for actors including Zendaya, Issa Rae, and Tracee Ellis Ross, Billy Porter, and Michael B. Jordan. The sports side has nominated athletes including Simone Biles, Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James, and Serena Williams.
Additionally, the BET Awards will honor anti-racist activist Assa Traoré as this year’s International Global Good recipient, which celebrates a celebrity who uses his or her platform to support the welfare of the global Black community. Nicholas Johnson, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, and D-Nice are Shine a Light recipients, recognized for their “exceptional resilience, ingenuity and creativity in the face of adversity.”

What performances or tributes should I tune in for?
While every category at the awards show is stacked, it’s the musical performances that many will be watching for. Chloe X Halle, whose new album Ungodly Hour dropped June 12, will perform in a lineup that includes Stallion, Legend, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, DaBaby, Kane Brown, Roddy Ricch, Summer Walker, Lil Wayne, Questlove, Black Thought, Nas, Rapsody, YG, Masego, D Smoke, Jonathan McReynolds, Karen Clark Sheard, Kierra Sheard, Jay Rock, SiR, Mister Jahi, Public Enemy, and Wayne Brady.

BET has also announced that celebrities including Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Billy Porter, Courtney B. Vance, Debbie Allen, Deon Cole, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, La La Anthony, Lena Waithe, Lizzo, Michael B. Jordan, Misty Copeland, Naomi Campbell, Omari Hardwick, Quavo, Quincy Jones, Rapsody, Regina Hall, Samuel L. Jackson, Saweetie, Sterling K. Brown, Viola Davis, and Whoopi Goldberg will “reflect on the current state of the community with a spotlight on Social Justice” in honor of the network’s 40th anniversary.
There will also be a pair of special tributes during the broadcast. One will pay homage to the late Kobe Bryant with a tribute from Lil Wayne. The other will honor groundbreaking rock and roll star Little Richard, with a salute from Wayne Brady.
