Leave it to Taylor Swift to kick off the weekend with a big surprise, and at midnight no less. On Friday, Jan. 27, at midnight, the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter dropped the music video for “Lavender Haze.”
This is the third song off her latest album, Midnights, to get the music video treatment. Music videos for “Anti-Hero” and “Bejeweled” premiered shortly after the album’s release in October.
“The Lavender Haze video is out now. There is lots of lavender. There is lots of haze,” Swift shared with fans via Instagram and Twitter.
“Lavender Haze” is both written and directed by Swift, who also stars in the video. More notably, her love interest is played by transgender model and artist Laith Ashley, which has garnered Swift lots of praise for her inclusivity.

“There is my incredible costar @laith_ashley who I absolutely adored working with,” Swift continued the caption. “This was the first video I wrote out of the 3 that have been released, and this one really helped me conceptualize the world and mood of Midnights, like a sultry sleepless 70’s fever dream. Hope you like it ?”
The “Lavender Haze” music video comes on the heels of Swift’s battle with Ticketmaster, in which fans waited several hours to purchase tickets to her upcoming “Eras” tour only for the site to freeze and crash. Albeit, fans are hoping to secure resale tickets before the tour kicks off in March.
In the meantime, here are seven Easter eggs fans can’t stop talking about from the “Lavender Haze” music video.
1. The koi fish-Speak Now guitar reference
Many eagle-eyed Swifties were quick to point out the artist’s subtle reference to her third studio album Speak Now, which has been highly speculated to be Swift’s next re-release. Fans believe the koi fish in the music video is a nod to Swift’s iconic Speak Now guitar, which features a koi fish mural.
2. The number 13 over both Swift and ex Taylor Launter’s hometowns
Throughout “Lavender Haze,” Swift makes tiny references to other tracks off Midnights as well as her favorite number, 13. However, there seems to be an Easter egg love triangle during the “Forecast at Midnight” scene.
Not only is there a 13 over Swift’s hometown of Nashville, but a 13 over the state of Michigan, which is seemingly Lautner’s hometown. Twitter user @hearditfrominez drew the correlation, adding that Launter is the inspiration behind “Back to December,” another song off Speak Now.
3. The flower field tribute to “Our Song”
The lavender flower field may look familiar to OG fans of the pop star. Swift recorded a similar scene for the 2006 hit “Our Song.”
4. The “Bejeweled” roundtable
A more obvious Easter egg, the rhinestone-studded table —is a nod to Midnights track number nine, “Bejeweled,” the music video for which was released back in October shortly after the video for “Anti-Hero.”
5. “Mastermind” vinyl, astrology signs, and Speak Now vinyl
Super fans discovered another trio of Easter eggs during the “Mastermind” vinyl scene. The record isn’t only named after the last song on Midnights, but has an illustration of both Swift and her boyfriend’s star signs.
Then Twitter user @augzuke shared that the vinyl record peeking out from underneath “Mastermind” looks a lot like Swift’s Speak Now album cover. Thus, fueling rumors that Swift is going to drop the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) next.
“Mastermind” could also be the next Midnights song to get a music video.
6. Numerous clocks time-stamped at midnight
Throughout, Swift makes several references to her album’s namesake. The video opens with a clock striking midnight before jumping to a scene of Swift blowing out lavender smoke that morphs into a clock at midnight.
7. The dramatic use of the color lavender, the same color of Speak Now’s album
While it might be the first half of the song’s name, lavender coincidentally has imagery ties to Speak Now, too. Many Swifties believe the singer intentionally chose “Lavender Haze” as her next music video because the color is a call back to the cover art of the Speak Now album, in which Swift dons a purple dress.
