Prince Philip retired in 2017, but he will briefly return to royal work for a special tribute.

Why is Prince Philip returning to royal duties?

The Duke of Edinburgh will take part in the nationwide commemorations planned for the 75th anniversary of VJ Day.

VJ Day is Victory over Japan Day, which commemorates the day on which Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II and bringing the war to an end.

In the UK, August 15 is the official day of commemoration for VJ Day.

To pay tribute to the veterans of WWII and VJ Day, Prince Philip will feature in a special moment to mark the anniversary.

The former Navy officer was on board HMS Whelp in Tokyo Bay in August 1945, when the Japanese surrender was signed.

Today, The Duke of Edinburgh has been succeeded as Colonel-in-Chief of @rifles_regiment by The Duchess of Cornwall, in a ceremony which took place at both Windsor Castle and Highgrove House. . The Duke has been Colonel-in-Chief of successive Regiments that have made up The Rifles since 1953, and today, they are the largest infantry Regiment in the British Army. . The Duke of Edinburgh’s arrival was marked by four Buglers, who are members of The Rifles’ military band. . The Duke was thanked for his 67 years of service and support to the Regiment, before the Buglers sounded the ‘No More Parades’ call, marking HRH’s final ceremony as The Rifles’ Colonel-in-Chief. . At Highgrove House, The Duchess of Cornwall was greeted by a Bugle call, and was welcomed by the Regiment’s Colonel Commandant as The Rifles’ new Colonel-in-Chief. . The Duchess has close links with the Regiment, and has served as Royal Colonel of its fourth Battalion since 2007.

This year, to commemorate the occasion he will feature in a montage paying tribute to the war veterans and remembering all those who didn’t return.

Prince Philip will be shown alongside an image of himself during the War.

And Prince Philip isn’t the only royal who will pay tribute on the day.

Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will lead the commemorations at 11am on August 15, starting with a two minute silence at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

They will be joined by several WWII veterans at the memorial.

After the two minute silence, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be performed.

Prince William will also honour those who fought in the war in a special television programme on BBC One, which is due to air on August 15.
